Director: Kundan Shah

Reasons to Watch: The very best of Hindi cinema, a dark laugh riot and the very best of offbeat Hindi cinestars

Reasons not to: You don’t know hindi..!(Simple, Get subtitles..!)

Storyline: Professional photographers Sudhir Mishra (Ravi Baswani) and Vinod Chopra (Naseeruddin Shah) open a studio in Mumbai and hope to hit it big despite a shoddy start. As their first real assignment they begin to work for “Khabardar” magazine, the editor of which, Shobha Sen, (Bhakti Bharve)’instigates’ them to probe the lives of the rich and scandalous. While investigating a case involving two builders Tarneja (Pankaj Kapur) and Ahuja (Om Puri), and their alliance with Municipal Commissioner D’Mello (Satish Shah), they come across corruption and treachery, and by chance become witnesses to a murder. What follows is complete pandemonium with these two trying to bring the culprits to justice and an end to corruption.

Climax Handling: The climax of the movie is the best comic sequence ever written in Indian cinema so much so that it inspired the end of a Hollywood movie five years later.

Points: This movie is all about dark, satirical humour while touching the deepest and darkest corners of the socio-political scene of India during that time. Most of the movie’s cast are NSD and FTII graduates and gold-medallists, who went on to become famous actors and directors of national, international fame and also of the small screen. A must watch.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Comment: Roll on the floor and laugh your ass off..! The second half will kill you with its humour…!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Posted by: Tejaswinee   in Drama, English, Romance

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindLanguage: English

Genre: Drama, Romance

Cast: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Elijah Wood, Kirsten Dunst, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo

Reasons to Watch: Peak-fantasy. It makes you wonder about so many choices you would have made had they been available to you. And the correctness of those. And that one lurking destiny. Amazing editing and camerawork even.

Reasons not to: None that i can see. Could be too cryptic to understand.

Director: Michael Gondry

Music: Beirot’s Opus 9 to Laxmikant Pyarelal to O my darling Clementine. Everything that fits.

Storyline: If you could, would you erase the memory of somebody you loved after you broke up? Would that heal you? Or would it distort you? If the other person erased you from their memory first, would you do that too, just to get back at them? If you meet up again, and fall in love again after you erase each other off time and again… Is that unlearning a lesson? Is it destiny that guides you through it? Is it meant-to-be or learn-what-is-not-meant-to-be…

Climax Handling: Amazingly well done. The climax doesn’t end until the very end of the story. Unreliable narrative. And extremely beautiful situation-handling.

Points: Kate Winslet’s many shades

Clementine: This is it, Joel. It’s going to be gone soon.
Joel: I know.
Clementine: What do we do?
Joel: Enjoy it.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Comment: Must see. For Everybody.

Very soon the whole town is talking about the ‘phenomenon’ and it becomes difficult for Malley to cope up with this ‘gift’. What follow is a tale of changing perceptions, accidents and discoveries and a gripping saga of how society can make or break a man, and how love and knowledge brings peace upon the most horrid disturbances.
