Deja Vu

Language: English

Genre: Action/Drama/Sci-fi/Thriller

Cast: Denzel Washington, Paula Patton, Adam Goldberg, Val Kilmer, James Caviezel

Direction: Tony Scott

Music: Harry Gregson-Williams

Reasons to watch: Denzel Washington, a good mix of science and drama, well-shot action sequences and nice cinematography

Reasons not to: Same old time-travel story, parts of the story defy their explanation.

Storyline: After an explosion on a ferry kills hundreds of US Navy sailors and their families, Doug Carlin(Denzel Washington) an ATF agent investigates the crime. Impressed with the ATF agent’s skills, the FBI invites him to join a new team comprising of Paul Pryzwarra(Val Kilmer), Dr. Alexander Denny(Adam Goldberg) and others. They use a state-of-the-art satellite imaging technology that is capable of recreating happenings within a four and a half day time period within a fixed radius. Meanwhile a young woman’s death is also reported whose burnt body is discovered. Agent Carlin believes that this death is a clue to the ferry explosion. As he works with the team, Agent Carlin discovers that this new technology is not a satellite imagery tool, but a much more complex space folding device capable of time travel.

After tracking down the bomber, Agent Carlin has another plan – why not go back in time and prevent the killing and the bomb explosion? Is it possible and is he successful in his attempt? Watch it to know the answers

Climax Handling: The climax can be a bit confusing and underplayed as compared to the action in the rest of the movie.

Points: Though the concept of space folding in the movie and its execution is only marginally believable(notwithstanding several glitches), the movie is more or less gripping.

Rating: 7.5/10

Comment: Watch it for the action and the cinematography, worth the popcorn really..!

The Truman Show

Posted by: Shantanu   in Drama, English, Satire

The Truman ShowLanguage: English

Genre: Drama/Satire

Cast: Jim Carrey, Laura Linney, Ed Harris

Direction: Peter Weir

Music:Burkhard Dallwitz, Philip Glass(This movie has some amazing soundtracks on the piano.)

Reasons to watch: Stellar performances by Jim Carrey and Ed Harris, Extremely simple yet infinitely thought provoking

Reasons not to: NONE other than if you have peas for brains

Storyoline: Truman Burbank is an ordinary guy in an ordinary little seaside town of Seahaven Island where nothing really happens. Everything in Truman’s life is perfect and it is this perfection that becomes so repetitive for Truman that he’s raring to break the mould. Truman’s father died in a boat accident when Truman was a kid and Truman, a witness to the disaster is now mortally scared of the seas and the water. This also prevents him from finding the one woman he ever really loved (not his wife) who has long since left for the other side of the world, the side where he cannot go. A strange light falling from the sky, a man who reminds him of his dead father, a strange radio broadcast and the feeling that the world really stops when he shuts his eyes all combine to make him feel something is wrong – what happens when he tries to find out the ‘truth’? Or does ‘truth’ exist? Here begins his journey against his fears, against his life, against the world he lives in, a journey of a lifetime.

Climax Handling: The movie ends on a brave and emotional note, deserving a tearful applause.

Points: Jim Carrey at his best (without relying on his forte – comedy), this movie will leave you spellbound, with many lessons to learn for all of us. Made at the fag end of the 20th century, this movie is most relevant in the present times. Watch it to experience it.!

Rating: 9.5/10

Comment: One of Jim Carrey’s best works ever, you’ll find a part of Truman in you. And you’ll love him more. Go, watch it.

Direction: Srinivasa Rao Singeetham

Music: The background score is enchanting and adds to the charm of the movie.

Reasons to watch: Amazing movie, simple and very humorous, brilliant acting and direction

Reasons not to: No song and dance show, no skin show, no car chases, in short – a purely entertaining movie.

Storyline: An educated unemployed young graduate male (Kamal Hassan) comes across a drunken male (Sameer Khakkar) with a lot of cash in a briefcase. Hassan, being a poor , educated-but-unemployed fellow, falls for the money. He keeps Khakkar in captivity, and steals his identity to enjoy life lavishly. He moves to the hotel where Khakkar was staying and enjoys the luxuries of his newly borrowed life, albeit he’s grossly misfit. Love eventually enters his life as he falls for the Hotel’s visiting magician’s daughter, head over heels. But with money, comes perils, and he discovers that someone is after his life, well, after his borrowed life that is.

As the burden of his deeds lands on his shoulders, he must now choose between love and truth, happiness or reality. Does he survive this test? Well that is the crux of the movie.

Climax Handling: The end of the movie is brilliantly filmed, touching yet didactic.

Points: No dialogues yet extremely captivating, symbolism and humor in its purest and best form, this movie has few of the most comic sequences ever shot.

Rating: 9.5/10

Comment: A worthy portrait of India in the eighties, this movie is a milestone in Indian Cinema. Don’t miss this movie for anything!

The magic of Narnia unfolds yet again, with deeper mysteries unraveling, as betrayal and revenge come knocking.

Climax Handling: The climax is the most exciting part of the movie and thoroughly entertaining.

Points: The acting is definitely better this time, but the movie leaves a lot to be desired. Especially Aslan. who appears in the last 20 minutes. You might as well miss the White Witch too, who makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her appearance.
