Having grossed over Rs 200 crores in just a span of 10 days, Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots starring Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor has turned out to be a mega hit in the box office. With the cinema halls having increased the number of shows and screens for 3 Idiots, it looks like this awesome entertainer might cross the mind-boggling Rs 300 crore mark when the final figures are out.
There has been some tattle going on for quite sometime about making Tamil and Telugu versions of 3 Idiots, ever since the movie hit the theatres last Christmas, only to become an instant hit. Grapevine suggests that two leading production houses are on the hunt and one of them, the same producers who made the Tamil and Telugu versions of Munna Bhai MBBS have offered Rs 10 crores to obtain remake rights from the makers in Hindi. “Yes, we are negotiating with Vinod and Raju for the remake rights of 3 Idiots. But we haven’t thought about the star cast.” — says Mano Akkineni from the production unit of one of the houses pitching for the remake rights.
Though there aren’t any confirmed reports in this regard, rumors are afloat throughout tinseltown about the star cast, with many top heroes having expressed their interest to be associated with the project. Madhavan is ready to repeat the role he played in the original, while Suriya is said to be the forerunner for Aamir Khan’s role in the movie. But, sources close to him say that he is not available immediately and is on a tight schedule . Some unconfirmed reports also state that Vijay is said to have shown interest in this project.
The scene in Kollywood is changing and set for such a remake, as movies with different storylines like Nadodigal, Pasanga etc, that deviate from the usual commercial entertainers seem to be doing well in comparison to the banal movies that are haphazardly released in patches throughout the year. If at all 3 Idiots is remade in both Tamil and Telugu, the people pitching for the remake rights should keep in mind that the venture would be highly risky because they will need to meet the audience expectations which will be sky-high after having watched the original in Hindi.
